Burning Man is not a music festival. I heard it mentioned repeatedly. Although I had known it was the case, hearing it reiterated began to make me nervous…was all the music bad? All of it??
SPOILER ALERT: No, it was not.
In my week on the playa, I heard not only my good friends play some absolutely gorgeous sets, but also Carl Cox, Thugfucker, Jamie Jones, Be Svendsen, Rony Saikaly, DJ Tennis, DJ Three, Rebolledo, and the lovely Mira…
Although Dio and I spent 3 hours creating a music itinerary – insistent upon making our Burning Man experience about music – eventually, as they say, “Burning Man happened”. We submitted and had a wonderful all-around experience, full of dust, EL wire, and delightful chaos in all colors.
Ultimately, I learned that although music is not central to Burning Man, nothing is, really. The only thing Burning Man is for everyone is impermanent, and there are a hundred ways to do it. Next year, I hope to bring at least one of my parents along for the ride.
